The D.O.D philosophy
Venturing in the last mile delivery business is more or less like any other business venture though with little unique challenges and pros here and there. One of the biggest challenge is the associated risk when starting out. For DOD, we were bringing in a business in a market that had seen similar companies try out the same venture and closed – interestingly, they had done so during COVID, a time when the world was under lock down and so many business forecasts foretold a boom in LMD. It was terrifying. Nanyuki, where we were planning to open our first branch is a geographically small town.Everything is a little bit about a stone throw distance away.Market research showed booming traffic was temporary especially on weekends with travellers and gateway seekers from Nairobi.A lot of people had access to private mobility means, either a car or a bicycle.All these factors made our first step seem to “not making any sense”. We had to develop a robust philosophy that was going to guide our plan of action, from starting out to scaling. We had to develop the DOD Philosophy. An acronym for: We saw the need to take the first step and to DARE even when we saw the odds seemed to be against us. We knew that if we tried out and stay long enough, we’d shine a beam of hope for other similar companies to want to venture in. This would mean attracting competition.We believe that competition is good and it always presents an opportunity for us to strive and provide better services to our clients. However to be able to stay ahead of competition, from day one we had to commit ourselves to OVERDELIVER and provide exceptionally good service that is centered around the client.By developing and fostering a family relationship with the clients, we were able to create a service around their own suggestions and feedback.We were building a service that they could feel ownership of through innovating on the feedback they gave and improving what works for them. By being elaborate and consistent on what we are offering to our clients, who are family now, we were able to DOMINATE the market and build confidence in our clients to refer us to other clients. We carry the DOD philosophy at heart and it has simplified life for our clients and created for them, a delivery service they can trust and rely on.
